Vote South Carolina Shrimp and Grits for America's Best Food

South Carolina's shrimp and grits is in the running for America's best food!

Three weeks ago, CQ Roll Call began the search for the dish that would become the "Taste of America." Each state was paired with a signature dish and voters brought those 50 delicious dishes down to the "Elite 8." Now, only 8 states remain to fight for the title of the dish that will be the "Taste of America." We may be a little biased, but we have to say South Carolina food is superb -- especially our beloved shrimp and grits.

The National Restaurant Association and South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association recommend Columbia's Blue Marlin Steaks & Seafood for the palmetto state's most loved dish. Their grits come locally from the only working mill left in South Carolina and whose neon sign is a Columbia landmark, Adluh Flour Mills. The grits are stone-ground and topped with South Carolina creek shrimp, andouille sausage and tasso gravy. Hungry yet?

Think South Carolina should be the Taste of America? Here's how you can help Shrimp and Grits take the title of America's best food.

Vote: Head to the Taste of America website and vote for South Carolina's shrimp and grits as many times as you'd like - there are no restrictions. Voting ends this Friday, June 7 at 5:00 pm and the winner will be announced on June 13, 2013 at the Elite 8 reception at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.
Spread the word on Twitter:

Outdoor Hot Spots in Columbia, SC

We get excited when people ask us what there is to do outdoors in Columbia, SC. Being a metropolitan city, we have the best of both worlds. Just minutes from downtown, you'll find South Carolina's only national park, two South Carolina State Parks and a State Forest. Weaving throughout the Midlands and these parks are three rivers: the Congaree, the Saluda and the Broad. From biking trails, campsites, riverfront parks and a lake, there's no question why Columbia, SC is The New Adventure Hot Spot.

Congaree National Park
Lace up your tennis shoes and hit the trails at South Carolina's only national park, Congaree National Park. If you call ahead of time, you can reserve a free, guided canoe tour of the swamp. The park also offers primitive campsites, an elevated boardwalk in addition to other hiking trails, special park events and some of the tallest trees in Eastern North America. (Note: Call to check park conditions and water levels before visiting.)

Dreher Island State Park
State parks and more
Sesquicentennial State Park
sits in the middle of the Sandhills region and Dreher Island State Park is conveniently located on the Lake Murray shore. Put in your kayak or canoe, or take advantage of the 18-mile bicycling trails at Harbison State Forest. In Lexington, hike around Peachtree rock (a geological wonder!) at the Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve.

River side parks
Go for a jog by the river on the West Columbia Riverwalk or at Cayce Riverwalk Park. Pack a picnic and enjoy Riverfront Park and its 2.5 miles of riverfront trails.

Three rivers and a lake
Perfect for kayaking, boating, swimming and sailing, take a dip in Lake Murray escape some of our famously hot summertime heat. Launch your kayak at Saluda Shoals Park for an easy coast down the Saluda river, and enjoy the parks miles of walking/biking trails as well as the water zone, Saluda Splash.

Outfitters like Get your Gear On and Adventure Carolina offer weekly, guided canoe and kayak river trips for those unfamiliar with the river. If you know the way the river flows, just rent your equipment from River Runner, and go!

For a more exciting adventure, spend the day on the Lake with a jet ski from Fifty-Fifty Watersports, or rent a boat for the whole family from Lake Murray Boat Rentals. Learn to sail with Lanier Sailing Academy. Or, tone it back down with a dinner cruise from the Spirit of Lake Murray.

Biking
With the City of Columbia's new bike racks throughout the city, it's a lot easier to pedal around town. Head to Outspokin' or Cycle Center to rent a road bike, cruiser or trail bike and take it to the streets or to a park.

9 Ideas for Romantic Dates in Columbia, SC

Find classic date night options at one of Columbia, SC's restaurants.

Friday is the perfect night to wind down from the work week with a date alongside your love. Therefore, we declare Friday, date night in The New Romantic Hot Spot.

In honor of date night, we've put together a list of nine famously hot dates. While classic date nights are always wonderful and romantic restaurants abound in Columbia, SC, here are nine date ideas beyond dinner and a movie:

In the studio
Whether your date is awed by your artistic skills or laughs at your lack thereof, Grapes and Gallery and Palmetto Paint and Pour offer romantic evenings where you can create and relax as an instructor leads you through painting. Plus, you can bring your own wine!

On the town
Start with desserts at one of Columbia's sweet hideouts, like Nonnah's, Goatfeathers or TerraThen head to historic Main Street for a movie at Nickelodeon Theatre, Columbia's only independent movie theater, where you can enjoy the latest indie flick, watch a unique documentary or fall in love with a classic film all over again - all with a glass of pinot or a brew of your choice. After, why not cap off the evening with a romantic birds eye view of the city lights at The Roof Top Lounge?

At the (wine) bar
Sample fine wines of all sorts, whether white, red, rosé, dessert or sparkling. Try a wine tasting at Cellar on Greene, Wine Down on Main, Wine Garage or The Gourmet Shop. With tastings at varying times, you can fit a romantic moment into nearly any part of your day.

On the water
If you're looking for adventure, share a canoe for two at Saluda Shoals Park or take a "full moon trip" with Adventure Carolina (where you can take a late night kayak trip when there's a full moon). Want a quiet stroll along the river? You can enjoy a romantic walk at sunset at Cayce Riverwalk ParkRiverfront Park or West Columbia Riverwalk. Or catch the Lake Murray sunset aboard a dinner cruise on the Spirit of Lake Murray.

At the drive-in

Open during the warmer months, The Big Mo's double features and a full concessions menu will be the perfect option for a spring or summer lovin' date.

Under the stars
Brighten up a Monday night with a visit to the University of South Carolina's Melton Memorial Observatory, where you can observe the stars, moon and planets. Some Saturdays, the observatory partners with Midlands Astronomy Club for Sidewalk Astronomy where you can star gaze outside Hunter-Gatherer Brewery(Next event: Saturday, May 18)
Finlay Park
At the jazz club
Sit back and relax with the sounds of smooth jazz at Hunter-Gatherer's jazz nights or Le Cafe Jazz's Friday night performances at the Top of Finlay Park. Food, jazz, ambiance -- you can thank us for the suggestion later!

Arsenal Hill Walking Tour
Arsenal Hill derives its name from Columbia's former military academy, established in the area in 1842. This walking tour takes you through the original two-mile by two-mile area of Columbia. The city was first established on Arsenal Hill to avoid flooding, as it is the highest point in downtown Columbia. Southern Things We Love in Columbia, SC

The shaded streets, the palmetto trees, the winding rivers, the barbecue with all the fixin's -- there's plenty to love about the south in Columbia, SC.

As a part of National Travel & Tourism Week and our journey to highlight the many reasons visitors choose Columbia, SC, we've devoted today to highlighting four signature Southern things we love about Columbia, SC: The New Southern Hot Spot.

LaRoque on Devine Street
Bows and Bow Ties
Ladies, nothing says 'Southern girl' like a bow sash around the waist of your sundress. (Add a monogram to that bow, and you've got a Southern belle.) Gentlemen, you're never fully dressed without a bow tie.

Leave it to Devine Street for some seriously Southern shoppingLaRoque, owned by Columbia-based designer Annabelle LaRoque, is stocked with enough bows and sashes, dresses with ruffles and bright colors to satisfy the most Southern of ladies. Pink Sorbet is your one-stop boutique to get your Lilly Pulitzer fix. Petal, Wish and many other Five Points shops have sundresses galore.

Brittons on Devine
What marks a Southern gent more than a bow tie? You'll find the most dapper Southern men sporting their bow ties in even casual situations. Check our 'famously hot' guide to bow ties to find out where to shop for this necessary accessory. Don't know how to tie a bow tie? Watch our video and leave it to Brittons' Lucky Levinson to show you the ropes.

The Food
Pulled-pork barbecue with 'Carolina Gold' mustard-base sauce at Doc's Barbeque and Southern Buffet. Adluh grits. Sweet tea from Lizard's Thicket. Chicken and waffles The Whig or Henry's (we even heard about them from The Shop Tart). Smoked gouda and bacon pimento cheese from DiPrato's. Fried Green Tomatoes from Mr. Friendly's Southern Cafe. Shrimp and grits from Blue Marlin. Fried chicken and macaroni and cheese at Judy's at the Market.

Carolina barbecue plate at Doc's Barbeque
...is your mouth watering yet? Southerners love to eat and the Columbia food scene is full of delicious Southern treats. The Midlands prides itself on its signature mustard-based barbecue, but don't overlook the delicious Certified South Carolina veggies like collard greens, fried okra and black-eyed peas to complete the south's traditional "meat and three" plate. Browse a long list of other Columbia, SC restaurants and go ahead, make your dinner reservations.

Warm Weather... and Palmetto Trees
The secret's out... we didn't get to be 'famously hot' without reason. Set aside our hot attractions, vibrant events and metropolitan atmosphere, and you'll probably crack the code -- we're known to be blessed with year-round temperate weather. More than 300 days of sunshine each year and even 75-degree January days give us the perfect setting for alfresco dining throughout the year and the perfect temps to a leisurely float down the river in an inner tube.

And did we mention palmettos? The palmetto tree is South Carolina's signature tree, and it marks our region and lines our streets with gracious Southern charm.

Boiled Peanuts: The Official State Snack
Did you know that boiled peanuts (you may hear them pronounced 'bowled' peanuts around here) are the official state snack of South Carolina? If you've never eaten this Southern snack, it may seem a little weird. But take our word for it, it's the perfect addition to any Southern tailgate or afternoon on the porch. To learn how to make your own or browse where to buy them locally, check out our blog about boiled peanuts in Columbia, SC.

Left to Right: Ernest Lee, South Carolina Gamecock Football, Uptown on Main
More Southern things we love in Columbia, SC? Monograms on everything -- check Uptown on Main for monogrammed gift items, local products and palmetto painted gifts galore.  Ernest Lee folk art --- you know, "The Chicken Man." Find him and his plywood painted art at his usual hot spot at Harden and Lady Street. SEC football -- College football season is unmatched in Columbia, SC, from tailgating to a swaying stadium. The history -- you'll quickly notice history marked throughout the region, like old warehouses and train stations turned entertainment district or historic homes and walking tours. And last, but certainly far from least, we adore the gracious charm of warm welcomes you'll find here.

Saturday, May 4, kicks off National Travel & Tourism Week. To celebrate the power of tourism to the Columbia region, we're highlighting things to do in Columbia, SC so locals can learn more about all the area offers to residents and visitors alike.

For instance, did you know that Columbia, SC is The New Historic Hot Spot? We're home to a long list of historic buildings, sites and museums that will take you back in time.

Whether you're a local who wants to be a hometown tourist or a visitor who is interested in traveling to Columbia, SC, here are five highlights of The New Historic Hot Spot:

1. Explore the South Carolina State House - for free!
Free guided tours of the South Carolina State House are available during the week and the first Saturday of the month. Step inside the State House to learn about this iconic structure and the history made inside its walls. Tours run on the half hour of each hour, beginning at 9:30 am. (Be sure to take walking tour of the State House grounds as well, where you will find the African-American History Monument just around the corner or the stars on the building that mark cannonball wounds from the Civil War).

2. Historic Columbia Home Tours
Whether you'd like to explore the stately Hampton-Preston Mansion and Robert Mills House & Gardens or uncover the story of one African-American family at Mann-Simons Site, Historic Columbia Foundation offers tours on Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

3. Historic Walking Tours

You can pick up a walking tour brochure at Columbia Regional Visitors Center today from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., where there will also be refreshments to help kick off National Travel & Tourism Week.

4. Lexington County Museum
Home to 36 historic structures, Lexington County Museum gives a peek into the past from South Carolina's colonial time through the Civil War. The museum's flagship structure, the John Fox House, displays period furniture and a beautiful quilt collection. Visit Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

5. South Carolina State Museum
South Carolina State Museum is a one-stop place to discover all of South Carolina's past, from its natural history to its connections to space and exploration. Uncover artifacts from the Civil War and be sure to learn more about the building's history as a cotton mill. Open Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

But that's just five things in a historic Southern city -- find a complete list of museums and historic attractions on Columbia, SC's website.
