The daring and controversial advertisements that rescued a struggling South Carolina textile business and made Springs Cotton Mills one of the giants of the industry are examined in this fascinating art exhibit. Through dozens of works of art, original illustrations and advertisements, museum guests will learn the story of dashing Col. Elliott Springs, a World War I flying ace. Springs inherited his father's textile mill in 1931 and used racy images, innuendo-laced text and savvy business moves to catapult the business to prominence following World War II.

05-17-2013 to 09-01-2013 - Pulitzer Prize winner and South Carolina resident Steven Naifeh is simultaneously fascinated with the history of Western art and with motifs derived from Islamic art. He combines these influences in his powerful, large-scale and colorful abstract art. This exhibition of Naifeh's art shows visitors that what we share culturally is perhaps greater than what separates us. Abstract art is capable of expressing complex ideas like unity and continuity. "We all need to understand more about the world in which we live, and Naifeh's exhibition is a smart, vibrant way of encountering Middle Eastern ideas," said CMA chief curator, Will South. The exhibition is presented through the generosity of The Hilliard Family Foundation.

Picasso: Master Prints

04-16-2013 to 08-11-2013 - This small, but luxurious exhibition is a rare opportunity for South Carolinians to marvel at the graphic work of one of the 20th century's greatest artists up close. As an artist, Picasso is hardly in need of introduction. He was arguably the most influential painter, sculptor and printmaker of the 20th century. Included in Picasso: Master Prints is a portfolio of 10 color pochoirs made in the early 1920s and selections from Picasso's best-known etchings, The Vollard Suite. "Pochoir" is French for silkscreen. This type of print, rarely made today, was once very popular. The process is time-consuming and demanding: for each color, a stencil is made and color is hand applied with a soft brush. This gives the effect of the print looking more like an actual painting. The prints in the exhibition mimic a series of gouache paintings that Picasso made in 1919-1920 in France. This show is presented through the generosity of Ms. Ann Marie Stieritz and Mr. John B. Carran.

06-20-2013 to 06-29-2013 - SPONSORED BY TREE OF LIFE CONGREGATION

"Trustus Theatre was the first in Columbia to produce this show in 1987, and we happily bring a newly imagined production back to the Capital City this summer. Sometimes sassy, sometimes sultry, with moments of devastating beauty - TRUST US, AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' is simply unforgettable."

Winner of Tony awards and The Drama Desk award - the outrageously prodigious comic and musical soul of 1930's Harlem lives on in this rollicking, swinging, finger-snapping revue that is still considered one of Broadway's best. The inimitable Thomas "Fats" Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk dives along Lenox Avenue, rent parties, stride piano players and that jumpin' new beat, Swing. Although not quite a biography, AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast struts, strums and sings the songs he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
