About the Columbia City Jazz Dance Company

The Columbia City Jazz Dance Company was formed in 1990 by artistic director Dale Lam and had the great honor of being named one of the "Top 50 Dance Companies in the USA" by Dance Spirit magazine for the 2002/2003 season. We are currently 30 members strong with each member possessing a strong passion for the art of dance. We train at the Columbia City Jazz Dance School. If you'd like to take class with us, check our our Class Schedule.

This program is supported, in part, through a Major Sustaining Grant made possible by contributors to the United Arts Fund of the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties.

We have a very active community outreach program and perform over 20 performances each year in Columbia and smaller cities in our state. We've reached audiences that may have never seen a dance performance of any kind!

In addition to our public performances in South Carolina communities and schools, we performed 30 shows in Singapore during the winter of 2000 and have danced for the European Cultural Month festivities in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the 1999 Tanzsommer Festival in Innsbruck, Austria, and at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C. for a number of years! Beginning in July, we will be touring in China for 5 weeks, staging 30 performances in Jinan City, Qingdao City, Zibo City, Weifang City, Chongqing City, Guangzhou City, Shenzhen City, Shanghai, and others.

We share our love of dance through our established "Guest Artists Series". Each year we bring in a number of internationally known guest artists to teach master classes, which are open to any dancer from any studio that wishes to attend. We've had some amazing classes from artist such Mia Michaels, Ray Leeper, Desiree Robbins, Doug Calwell, Liz Imperio, Jason Parsons, A.C. Ciulla and others. Our "Guest Artists Series" classes usually take place during August through November. As artists are booked, we'll place announcements and registration forms on our [ Events ] page. If you'd like to be added to our mailing list for master class schedules and other announcements, use our Contact Form. All are welcome and we've had dancers from four different states in the studio at one time taking class!

More about auditions [ here ]Entry into the Columbia City Jazz Company is by [ audition ], which we hold at the end of our season in May, and again at the beginning of our season in late July or August. If you're interested, keep an eye on our Home page where the audition schedule is posted.

Being in Company is hard work. Each division has over four hours of Jazz Classes each week to concentrate on technique, plus another at least 2 hours of ballet and another 4 to 6 hours of rehearsal to set choreography and clean pieces. It's demanding, but it's paid off as we've accomplished some pretty amazing things in the last ten years!

Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is no mere translation or abstraction from life; It is life itself.
Havelock Ellis As if we weren't already busy enough, we also participate in a four conventions and competitions each year, such as Tremaine, Starsystems and Company Dance, plus a National Competition every other year. We are proud to have received a number of national awards and scholarships over the year.
