Edens & Avant Announces Whole Foods Market to open in Columbia, S.C.
Cross Hill Market to be home for World’s Leading Natural and Organic Grocer
COLUMBIA, SC (July 1, 2011) –- Edens & Avant announced today that Whole Foods Market, the leading retailer of natural and organic foods, will be opening in the new Cross Hill Market retail center in Columbia, South Carolina. The new store will be the third South Carolina location for Whole Foods Market and the first to be located in South Carolina’s capital city. Whole Foods Market will occupy approximately 35,000 square feet of retail space at Cross Hill Market, a 71,000 square foot development at the intersection of Cross Hill Road and Devine Streets. In addition to Whole Foods, Cross Hill Market will feature an eclectic mix of regional, local and national shops, boutiques and restaurants, as well as a direct pedestrian connection to adjacent neighborhoods. The projected construction start date is January 1, 2012 with an anticipated opening of October 2012.
“We’ve taken a long-term approach in developing this property, because we wanted to ensure that Cross Hill Market would be truly unique in both design and merchandising mix – including a grocer anchor that promotes sustainable food and products,” said Jodie McLean, President and Chief Investment Officer, Edens & Avant. “As partners with the community, we are very cognizant of our role in adding to the urban landscape and we believe that Cross Hill Market will be an inviting, community-focused retail development that will contribute to building a healthier community. We are very grateful for the patience of local residents and we think their patience will be rewarded as we deliver a retail center that will enhance the overall quality of life in the state’s capital city.”
Scott Allshouse, regional president for Whole Foods Market South Region said, “We’re really looking forward to opening our doors in Columbia. We’ve been hearing from folks in the Columbia area for years, we know they’re looking for more natural and organic food options and we’re ready to be a part of this great community.”
“Whole Foods Market is one of the world’s most innovative and progressive grocers and their commitment to sustainability, community and fresh food was a huge factor in bringing them to Columbia,” said Lyle Darnall, Edens & Avant Managing Director. “We are excited to work with such a great retailer and know Columbia will benefit from this partnership. Cross Hill Market will create a dynamic new community-focused shopping experience that will be the centerpiece of a new shopping district that is bookended by two of our other signature properties at Trenholm Plaza and The Shoppes at Woodhill.”
