Solar Eclipse in Columbia, SC

The United States hasn't seen a total solar eclipse since 1979, and Columbia, SC will be a prime location to see the upcoming eclipse on August 21, 2017. Columbia will experience 2 minutes and 36 seconds of totality, one of the longest amounts in the nation for seeing the sun completely eclipsed. Plus, due to South Carolina's sunny summers, there's a good chance for clear skies in August. Start planning your trip for the great eclipse!

South Carolina State Museum: Eclipse Headquarters

The South Carolina State Museum is going to be central to the city and region's eclipse festivities. Featuring an obvervatory with a 1926 Alvan Clark refracting telescope, an antique telescope gallery and a state-of-the-art planetarium, the museum offers plenty of astronomical fun to enjoy before the big event. The museum will also be hosting a number of activities and events surrounding the eclipse:

  • Tours of the Robert B. Ariail Collection of Astronomy/Telescope Gallery
  • Special shows in the planetarium
  • Evening observing opportunities 
  • Solar Eclipse Soiree on Saturday, August 19, from 6 to 9 p.m.
  • Solar Eclipse Totality Party on Monday, August 21, from 12 to 4 p.m.
