Reconstruction began on the 8601' runway in April and includes removing approximately 1.67 miles of existing asphalt and over 400 in-pavement lights and replacing with new 16' thick concrete pavement and new LED in-pavement lights. The W. L. Harper Company is the prime contractor to include several DBE firms as sub-contractors. An estimated 50 jobs were created as a result of this project. Interesting fact: the amount of concrete being placed equals to the amount necessary to build a new 4' thick sidewalk from Columbia all the way to Jacksonville, Florida. The cost of the project is $12,994,419 and is primarily funded through grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
